The demand for clean drinking water is growing every day due to the increased population and their lifestyle. However the rapid industrialisation and human activities have resulted in water pollution which cause severe environmental and health effects. Thus the need to treat the polluted water is a critical issue which needs to be addressed. Membrane technology is increasing gaining importance in the water treatment due its guaranteed treated water quality, simplicity and small space utilisation. The use of membranes has enabled the treatment of contaminated water, production of drinking water from seawater and treatment of kidney patients. Membrane technology involves the art of membrane making, designing of systems and finally its applications. This talk gives an overview on some of the techniques used in membrane making and its application in water treatment and dialysis.
