”How to Survive PhD Journey”

Challenges faced during the PhD journey are multi-faceted. Nature of the challenge differs from person to person. Therefore, it is important for the postgraduate students to get inspired, motivated and advised on how to survive their PhD journey. This structures course objective are:
● To provide advices to postgraduate students in various aspects during their postgraduate journeys
● To inspire and motivate postgraduate students

The speakers started by introducing the pre-PhD journey including the choices like coursework, school, department, research interests and supervisor. They shared their own pre-PhD journey and advised on how to make choices. Next, the speakers explained how to think like a PhD students, which included the topic on think big, ask why, understand the literature, be critical, reason, and thinking skills. Following that, the speakers gave advices on topics such as know what is expected of you, directing your efforts, being busy, helping other students, managing yourself, prioritize, working with your supervisor and being resourceful. They shared on finding the contribution of the study. The speakers proceeded with advices on visibility, communication, burning bridge, managing finances and scholarships. In addition, the speakers provided tips on research including literature review, simulation/ programming, lab works, publications, getting your research off the ground, intellectual property, and author-ship vs. contributor-ship, conferences, and dissertation.

Finally, the speakers answered the questions asked by the participants and the Q&A session went on for 1 hour. After taking the group photo, the course ended at 4.30 pm. The feedback from the participants are positive overall. Some of the comments on the course are helpful, informational, motivational, interactive and easy to understand.
