19 April, Johor Bahru – This course aims to expose postgraduate students to the best practices, strategies, and insights for VIVA-VOCE preparation. This course was presented by Professor Dr Kahar bin Osman, who obtained a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire, New Hampshire, USA. His research interests include applications of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), fluid-structure interaction (FSI), and experimental techniques in studying mechanical and cardiovascular systems and the analysis, design, and optimisation of cardiovascular devices, which he has been practising for more than 25 years. The course started with the introduction of the VIVA VOCE procedure, and the participants were grouped according to their research method type. Then, the strategy and tips used before and during the VIVA-VOCE presentation were highlighted. The speaker also shared his experience, highlighting several case studies as a candidate supervisor, examiner, and chairman of VIVA- VOCE. After that, there were some activities, such as students explaining their research projects in 2 minutes based on their research titles and a mock VIVA-VOCE from a PhD candidate.
