5 July, Johor Bahru – The online coffee session entitled “Invention of Rehabilitation Robots: Story of Technology that Cares” has been successfully organized by Postgraduate Student Society of School of Electrical Engineering (PGSS-SKE), Postgraduate Student Society of School of Mechanical Engineering and School of Biosciences & Medical Engineering (PGSS-SKM&SKBSK) in collaboration with School of Graduate Studies (SPS) at 10:30AM on 5 July 2022 (Tuesday).

The coffee session aims to share


  • the technology and invention of compact and portable rehabilitation robots
  • the inspirational story of the inventions, challenges met along the journey, and achievements in competitions and commercialization

  • to motivate and inspire the students with successful inventions

We have invited Dr. Khor Kang Xiang, who is an alumnus of UTM and the co- founder of Techcare Innovation, to share with us the technology of robots for rehabilitation and the inspirational story of inventions. He graduated his Bachelor Degree in Electrical and Mechatronics and Doctor of Philosophy in Bioengineering from UTM, in 2013 and 2018, respectively. He has achieved 30 innovations awards, 10 years of robotic experience, and 20 research publications. He had also presented his work twice at TEDx conferences. He is now the managing director of Techcare Innovation. He leads and manages the team in developing new innovation in rehabilitation sector besides developed the awards winning project including rehabilitation robots that assist the rehabilitation of people with disability such as CR2-Reaching and CR2-Haptic, as well as balancing equipment.

A total of 47 participants attended the course.

The Cisco-Webex meeting was opened at 10.10AM to allow the registration of participants. The course started at 10.30AM and the moderator introduced the speaker. Afterwards, the speaker started the presentation. After the introduction, the speaker shared the journey from idea to innovation which involves the motivation, challenges and methods. After that, he shared the rehabilitation technology. Lastly, he discussed the tips to convert the research to impact the society. At 11.20 AM, the presentation ended and followed by a Q&A session. The online course ended at 11.45AM after taking group photos with participants.
