Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Nadia emphasized that the PE title can serve the academician as a recognition of achievement. Furthermore, certain professions require an individual to have a PE title to fulfill the job requirement. Obtaining PE also could boost career prospects and employability.

The Path of Becoming a Professional Engineer via Route A and Route B

During the seminar, the speaker enlightened the audiences regarding the path on becoming a Professional Engineer, which consist of Route A and Route B. Route A consist of Professional Assessment Examination (PAE) which is conducted by the Boards of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). Meanwhile, Route B is obtaining a Professional Engineer from an overseas regulatory body, for example, becoming a chartered engineer from IChemE. For Route B, the person still needs to apply and pass PAE, which consists of professional interview and essay writing to be registered as PE.

Register as a Graduate Engineer to Ensure Your Experiences Counts

Moreover, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Nadia highlighted that registering as a Graduate Engineer (GE) with BEM is very important before collecting any valuable experiences. The analogy of GE is like your birth certificate, which without it, the experiences that we collected when becoming an engineer are considered not exist. Therefore, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Nadia strongly emphasized to become a GE right after graduated from bachelor’s degree.

Take-Home Message

Start writing and compiling your experiences even during your postgraduate studies. It is worth noting that obtaining PE helps in intellectual development, provides opportunities for research collaboration with industries, and provides form recognition on competency of specific profession.
