three minutes thesis (3MT)
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an academic research communication competition that challenges Doctoral students to present their research in just three minutes using only one static slide. The competition encourages participants to explain complex research in a clear, concise, and engaging way for a non-specialist audience, highlighting the significance and impact of their work.
The 3MT competition was first developed by The University of Queensland, Australia in 2008. Since then, it has grown into a global initiative and is now held at more than 900 universities across over 85 countries worldwide. The competition aims to strengthen postgraduate students’ research communication, presentation skills, and public engagement, which are essential skills for researchers and future leaders in academia and industry.
At Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), the 3MT Competition is organized by the Postgraduate Student Society (PGSS) in collaboration with the School of Graduate Studies (SPS). The event provides a valuable platform for postgraduate students to showcase their research, develop confidence in presenting their ideas, and connect their work with a wider audience.
