The School of Graduate Studies, under the Department of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International), is offering a funded research attachment for qualified candidates. This attachment provides a valuable opportunity to engage with top 100 global universities and collaborate with renowned researchers, enabling participants to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings, expand professional networks, and enhance research and career readiness.
Funding is limited to 20 students, subject to University approval. The attachment will take place between July 2026 and September 2026.
What is UTM Ascend-X Attachment Programme?
The UTM Ascend-X Attachment Programme offers an exclusive opportunity for selected candidates to be embedded within world-renowned institutions and work alongside leading researchers on cutting-edge research initiatives, enhancing both academic depth and international research visibility.
What is Covered by the Funding?
(i) Travel Costs
• One round-trip plane ticket (travel date will be the closest date to the term of placement) will be funded. The maximum flight ticket allocation shall be
determined based on the destination location and is subject to the approval of the School of Graduate Studies.
• Travel arrangements, including the purchase of airline tickets, must originate from Senai Airport, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or Singapore Airport.
(ii) Daily Expenses
• Meal allowance: Covers daily food costs.
• Lodging allowance: Covers accommodation costs. If accommodation is arranged by the host institution, only the meal allowance will be provided. Allowance rates are adjusted based on the cost of living in the host country. For more details, please refer to this link for allowance rates and country categories.
Duration of Internship
- The attachment should last one (1) month, with a minimum engagement period of 20 working days (full-time equivalent).
- Internships can extend up to three (3) months full-time during the PhD or MPhil candidature or may vary based on the host institution.
Eligibility & Requirements
- The funding is only provided for MALAYSIAN.
- Must be a current student with active status at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
- Must have secured an attachment with a Top 100 University (Read More).
- Internships at institutions from top 100 universities or prominent researchers (ST: h-index>50, SS: h-index>30) with expertise for specific research areas can be given consideration.
- Open only to Doctoral and full-research Master’s students.
- Must have completed two semesters of study at UTM and must not be in the final semester.
- Should not have completed the submission of their thesis for examination.
- Must have passed the first assessment (proposal defense).
- Must have completed the Research Methodology Course and University General Course.
- Must demonstrate satisfactory research progress and good command of English.
- Must be in good health and physically present at UTM at the time of application.
- Must agree to enroll at the host institution and abide by its rules and regulations.
- Any intellectual property (IP) generated during the internship will be owned based on a mutual agreement between the host institution and UTM.
Expected Output
- at least one (1) joint publication within 12 months after the attachment ends, with host institutions that have been accepted or published in journals indexed in WOS ranked Quartile 1 (Q1) or Quartile 2 (Q2) according to the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). The eligible journals must be listed under Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), or Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) only.

Answer: No, the UTM Ascend-X Attachment Programme is specifically designed for Malaysian citizens. Unfortunately, international students are not eligible to apply for this funding. - Who is eligible for the UTM Ascend-X Attachment Programme funding?
